GEFA MINUTES

Nevember 20, 2008

President Allan Krosner called the meeting to order at 7:10 pm and the minutes of the October 16 meeting were approved.

Treasurer Karen Smith reported account balances as follows: GEFA $5211.87 and Airfest $6699.78.

Jessica Kraemer, our current Scholarship recipient, thanked us again and reported she has about 12-14 hours now. She said her activity is also her “senior project.”

Aria Davenport completed a solo cross country from Auburn to Chico and back.

Another guest was Danielle Zuckerman and soon to be born son Nicholas.

Katie Guilliat announced that the old style “wings” badges would have to be ordered in large numbers, and since there are no plans to do that, members are encouraged to make their own personalized badges (GEFA logo is available to copy) and put into plastic badge holders. Katie also reminded us of the December 17 Christmas party and the need to buy tickets by December 11.

Nominations for Board Members and specific Officers were closed and those already nominated (and reported last month) were elected. The new officers are Doug and Maureen Young (President and Secretary), Gary Guilliat (Vice President) and Karen Smith (Treasurer); All are Members of the Board. Gerry Davenport will continue as a Member of the Board and as our Webmaster.

Tim O’Brien led a discussion of the possibility of doing AirFest 2009. Evan Wolfe, who led the very successful Auburn event this summer joined in with comments on their experiences. Tim is concerned about raising sponsor money in the current economy and the group discussed options for spending less, such as a less costly dinner dance. Karen Smith wanted us to put a focus on generating scholarship money, and on enticing new members. Evan reported that they raised their entrance fee to $10 and had no complaints whatsoever. It was suggested that we try to get some county support for the event (as Placer County did for Auburn). Karen moved that we put together a committee to explore the ways and means for putting on AirFest 2009. It was seconded and passed.

Allan noted the passing of Don Ellis, and said that services would be held at 2pm on Nov 21 at the Methodist Church in Grass Valley. Gary Guilliat said the RV formation group would do a flyover and missing man formation at 4pm on Nov 23 at the airport.

Gerry Davenport agreed to make a website section for memorials like the one he put out for Don this week. He noted that he read with great interest the material submitted for Don, and Maureen Young mentioned it was a shame that some of us only learned of his achievements after he passed away.

Keith Thomassen asked him if he would be willing to post a picture and brief statement for each member so we can get to know our fellow members better in this way. Please send a JPEG file of your picture to Gerry, with a short statement (50 words or less) of what you’d like others to know about you.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:35 pm.

Respectfully (and for the last time) submitted by
Keith Thomassen
Secretary

GEFA MINUTES

October 16, 2008

President Allan Krosner called the meeting to order at 7:15 pm and the minutes of the September 18 meeting were approved.

Treasurer Karen Smith reported account balances as follows: GEFA $5203.87 and Airfest $6699.78.

A $200 deposit was made towards our reservation of Alta Sierra for Christmas.

Frank Minor introduced his son John as his guest. John just finished his M.D. in Pediatrics, and is interested in flying.

Allan asked for further nominations for officers, and elections are next month. Gary and Karen agreed to run again for Vice President and Treasurer respectively, and Doug and Maureen Young volunteered to run for President and Secretary.

Katie Guilliat announced that the Christmas party will be held on Wed, Dec 17. By a show of hands people chose to again have last year’s guitarist and to reserve the dance floor.

Gary Guilliat suggested a fly-out for lunch at Half Moon Bay on Sunday, Oct 19. He said the recent fly-out to McMinneville saw the best possible flying weather in Oregon, and the 3 couples that participated enjoyed the Spruce Goose display on Saturday. There is also an IMAX theater there. A stop on the coast Sunday morning for breakfast at Salishan, a resort near Gleneden, topped off the trip.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:30 pm.

GEFA MINUTES

September 18, 2008

President Allan Krosner called the meeting to order at 6:45 pm after an enjoyable gathering of members and our last BBQ at the park for 2008.

The August minutes were accepted as written Treasurer Karen Smith gave the treasury report as follows: GEFA Account Balance: $5453.87 Airfest Account Balance: $6699.78

Nancy Machado introduced her sister, Sharon Gibson, as a guest for the evening. (The resemblance was uncanny!)

Katie Guilliat talked of the potential for a fly out to McMinnville, Oregon for the weekend of September 26-28th with a visit to the museum that houses the Spruce Goose. This will be a last minute decision dependent on the weather.

Katie also asked the club if they would like a Christmas Party held at the Alta Sierra Country Club in December as has been held in the past. This idea was approved with the cost of the dinner ticket to be $40. It was also unanimously accepted that any additional expenses incurred, if any, would be paid with club funds. Katie will contact Alta Sierra CC to organize this event and will report on the date at the next scheduled meeting. Gayle Amato volunteered to assist.

Karen Smith asked if any club members would like to tour the DC-10 Tanker Base atMcClellen. This could be a fly out or drive out whichever suites you. Karen will get back with details.
It was additionally suggested by a member that a tour of the museum could be incorporated in this visit. For more information on the museum visit: http://www.aerospacemuseumofcalifornia.org

Jim Booth spoke about the fun that was had at Reno this year and how everyone that attended the "Margarita Bash" that was hosted by Jim and Mary Booth andBar-tendedby Glen Ward was a real success. Tim O'Brien talked about the great pictures he took and will hopefully give us a showing next month.

Evan Wolfe told us about Dego Red being based at Auburn in the near future. He also said that there were two P-51's that were on there way to Auburn as well. He will most likely be flying these P-51's in the future so he was very excited about their arrival.

Aria Davenport gave an update on his flying as well as his joining the ROTC. He travels down to Sacramento two days a week to attend classes. He is the only "pilot" in the group. Go Aria!

Allan Krosner asked for volunteers to run for the position of President and Secretary. No one responded. (But after the meeting was adjourned, Doug Young volunteered to run for President and Maureen Young volunteered to run for Secretary.) Gary Guilliat will run for VP and Karen Smith will run for Treasurer again for 2009.

This is the last month that the GEFA meeting will be held at the Airport Park. The next meeting will be held at Seaman's Lodge at Pioneer Park on October 16th, 2008. Social starts at 6:00 and dinner starts at 6:45 with the general meeting to follow.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:15 pm.

August 21, 2008

Vice President Gary Guilliat called the meeting to order at 7:25 pm and the minutes of the July 17 meeting were approved. Treasurer Karen Smith reported account balances as follows: GEFA $5453.87 and Airfest $6699.78.

Gary introduced our scholarship winner, Jessica Kraemer, who personally thanked us for our support. She has 10-12 hours with Adam at Alpine Aviation, and is enjoying it immensely.

Tim O’Brien reported that the Auburn airshow was fantastic. In perfect weather and a good crowd, he and Sandy Sanders did the announcements. They had a Friday dinner/social and there was a display of antique cars.

Katie Guilliat reported that you could get badges at the Trophy Shop on Maltman. Download the GEFA logo from the website (or any other logo you want) and bring it to the shop.

There were 8 airplanes and 16 folks that went to Jackson Hole and Glacier from August 12 to 17. (SEE THE PHOTOS) (SEE THE SLIDESHOW MOVIE)Betty Pearson gave a report on the trip. The group was treated on arrival in Jackson Hole to a margarita social hour in the park, courtesy of the Thomassen’s who arrived two days earlier, then rib’s at Bubba’s.

The next day began with breakfast at Jackson Lake Lodge with its spectacular view of Mt. Moran, and a wonderful day driving through Teton National Park and a walk to Leigh Lake (saw lots of Elk). Dinner at the Bar J Ranch for their meal and musical show capped the day.

The group departed on the 14th for Cut Bank, where they were greeted by an impending full weekend airport fly-in and car show, so parking became a challenge. A casual afternoon around the Many Glacier Hotel was followed by another “margarita hour” and then dinner in the Hotel. A hike followed a lovely boat ride on two lakes for some folks on the second day. All had dinner at the Cattle Baron in Babb. The next day was spent driving to Waterton, Canada and stopping at the Prince of Wales Hotel before returning to Cut Bank for another margarita hour. Dinner at the Shenandoah completed the day. The group flew home on the 17th, Rudy and Keith going non-stop and the rest going to Pasco, WA for lunch before heading home. Great trip!

Gary Guilliat suggested a fly-in next moth to McMinneville to see the Spruce Goose, and to the museum at Tillamock. He suggested the last week in September. Contact him if interested, and for details.

Bruce McGrew reported on OSH. He said it was well attended (540,000 according to the EAA)—more than 2006 but less than 2007. He said his video business area is doing well, although some thought other business areas are down.

Jim Booth invited all to stop by the eve of Wed Sept 10 at the Reno Air races, for a social hour at the trailer. The Frisbee’s said they were going to Gold Beach the 27th and invited people to join them.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:05 pm.

Respectfully,
Keith Thomassen
Secretary.
