Scholarship Recipients

Carol Anderson - GEFA Scholarship Chairperson

The Golden Empire Flying Association is offering a $3,000 scholarship to Nevada County sophomores or juniors to learn to fly.

The local pilots association recognizes the importance of encouraging the younger generation to pursue their dreams of flying.  The $3,000 award is only a portion of what it will cost to earn a private pilot's license, and the scholarship recipient must be able to meet the remaining training costs of $1,500.

To be eligible, students must reside in Nevada County, be 16 years old by July 1, and be able to meet the physical and medical standards for private pilots set by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration.

Lessons must be taken in Nevada County by a qualified instructor who is a member of the local association.

Applications can be found through school counselors. Deadline for submission of entry to the school's scholarship department is May 31, with the winner notified in June.

Each year, Nevada County's youth also have opportunities to experience flying for free. Watch for information about Young Eagles Day this summer at the Nevada County Airport in Grass Valley; and for information about Airfest, held the second weekend in July.
