It was asked if we wanted to do a gift exchange.  After much debate it was decided that if you wanted to participate in an exchange that it would be a Christmas theme gift and under $10.00.  You do not need to participate in the exchange just come and have fun.

Betty is doing the music for dancing.  It was also suggested that you might want to bring canned foods for the food bank (not required) but much appreciated.

New Business:

  • Katie brought forth an idea to see if anyone wanted to have the meetings every other month.  The members in attendance wanted it to remain the same.  We had 36 members in attendance, so keep it up for the new officers.

Happy Thanksgiving.  The meeting was adjourned.

From 1800 to 1900 hours the participating members enjoyed visiting and indulging in their favorite beverage while cooking their main course on the park BBQ's.

We all took note that Kathy Hammes had knocked down the weeds and cleaned up the park — Kathy was also kind enough to have the BBQ's started for us by the time we arrived at 6:00 PM.  A Big Thank You to Kathy Hammes for all of the "beautification" she provides at the airport.

At 1900 hours Vice President Gary Guilliat called the meeting to order in the absence of our President, Doug Young.  Carol Gibson serenaded us with the GEFA Song.  Very Nice!

Wade has been working at Edwards AFB and they will continue to live in California City — there is a big glider community there and Wade has soloed and is very close to getting his glider rating.  Kaydee graduated from Sac State in May with a degree in geography and will be looking for employment in that field.  A Big Congratulations to them both!
  • New information about TJ O'Brien — son of infamous Tim O'Brien — and his upstart business of auto detailing — he will actually detail just about anything and has his own supplies to accomplish a fine job.  He is charging just $14 per hour and comes to your location.  I think you might be able to talk him into just about any job you may have so please contact him if have work for him.  (530) 273-1972 or 613-6708.

Sounds like everyone had fun especially the women who got to shop. Hopefully Gary won’t be too afraid to land there next time, or at least he will be the first and not the last.

AWOS fund was mentioned but proceeding was put off until next meeting.

Officers for next year were unanimously voted on keeping this year’s committee.

Meeting was adjourned at 8:40 pm

August 2009

The meeting started at 7:11 p.m.  Doug Young asked for approval of the August minutes — They were approved.

The treasurers report was read by Karen Smith with the GEFA account having $3900.69.  The Airfest account having $28,056.12 — Karen has a profit and loss statement for those who might be interested in seeing.

Guests in attendance was Tom Engleman and his wife Carol

Tim O'Brien did a final rap up on Airfest.  He is setting up the Thank You notice for the volunteers with certificates and T-shirts.

Gary Gulliat suggested that we should fund the airfest separate account with $20,000.00 so Tim doesn’t have to worry about whether or not we can do an Airfest 2011.

Lively discussion followed and some members stated that half the proceeds were EAA ‘s and that we couldn’t vote for EAA.  GEFA members wanted to vote and approved the resolution as follows.  Rusty brought up that EAA needs to make this decision also.  Karen brought up that the two boards needed to meet to come up with a mutual agreement has how to fund and and make our airfest the best one around and to have funds available each year

RESOLUTION #08-20-2009
“AIRFEST ACCOUNT START UP MONEY FOR 2011 AIRFEST”
IT WAS SUGGESTED THAT WE KEEP $20,000 IN THE ACCOUNT FOR THE NEXT AIRFEST.  AFTER A LIVELY DISCUSSION THE MEMBERS OF GEFA VOTED AND APPROVED WITH 2 OPPOSED.  THE NEXT STEP is to set up meeting between the two boards.

New Business:
The Wards wanted to let the group know they would be at the Reno Air races.
For information on airfest Rusty told us there is a list on the EAA web site that gives a breakdown of the pancake breakfast to help anyone who wants to step in and take charge of this event at anytime. Thanks Rusty.

Guest speaker TOM ENGLEMAN Talked to all of us about putting an internet interface at the airport for an AWAS connection with local Nevada County weather at our airport. There is a cost to this so he wanted to bring it up to GEFA so we could think about and get involved in the procedure. The service would provide

  1. Cell tower network install box X-25 for $1500 plus $80.00 a month for service
  2. service provider box with server will have internet access.

Pilots cannot use their cell phone aloft so this will be a great help.  Gary was suggesting that the fee could be split by GEFA and EAA and then we can go to the county for the monthly fee or split that also.  This is food for thought.  He has gone to the airport commission and know is bringing the information to the pilot community. Thank you Tom for your presentation.

July 2009

The meeting started at 7:20 p.m.  Doug Young asked for approval of the June minutes — They were approved.

Doug gave a personnel thank you to Tim O'Brien and all the volunteers that made the Airfest 2009 such a success.

The treasurers report was read by Karen Smith with the GEFA account having $3869.  The Airfest account having $43,398.94.  The gate sales totaling $18,014 of that number.  There are still some bills outstanding so our August balance will show what we will have in the airfest account.

Tim O’Brien stated our dinner dance earned $12,500 and dance only earned $325 with an expenditure of $6180 for a profit of $6673.76.  The ticket sales on Friday at the door was $3600.  We ran out of food and refunded some diner money but all in all was a huge success.  Many Many Thanks to Betty for taking on the dinner dance and doing such a great job!

Tim also stood up with Karen on her treasures report and wanted to thank Gerry Davenport and son Aria for helping in the 7:00 am parking of vendors etc., a special thanks to all the volunteers.  Tim was asked what was the Greatest Airfest fund raiser?  He thought and said it was 1997 when we cleared $7,000-$8000 and Julie Amarel was in charge.  I think we might have passed that amount we will know in August.

Tim will be having a wrap up meeting for all the volunteers and will write up a thank you for the Union paper to all who made the Airfest 2009 a great success.  Including all the new sponsors we had that made the airfest a bigger and better show.  A thank you to Gary Guilliat for the quality of people he brings to our airfest it was mentioned that Esworth Ketsil (sp) calls Grass Valley airfest his family.

The EAA pancake breakfast and planes were great.  Karen Smith said our Airfest had a Family Personality.  Tim, we want to thank you and Brian O’Brien for talking us through the show on Saturday.  We expressed our condolences to Tim of the loss of his Sister in-Law but Tim said his brother helped at the airfest stating his brother would always fly out to air shows.

Bruce Marlow did a super job with all his volunteers in the clean up after the airfest.  You didn’t even know a big event had happened at the airport — it was super.  Tim O’Brien wants to put together his potluck to recognize all the volunteers.  He doesn’t want to forget anyone so let him know who they all are . Thank you again Tim and all the many people that made airfest 2009 such a great success.  We had a guest John Pichitino who is a certified flight instructor in training and flight reviews (Email: pich@oro.net) Thanks again for a wonderful Airfest 2009.

There are currently 22 and still growing.  They include many food types, memorabilia and toys, displays and non-profit awareness.  Tim is approving based on application and insurance and is sending out passes and maps for efficient placement on the airport.  I will meet with Dave Schwarz to arrange placement & power needs.  Although we are encouraging set-ups on Friday, we will need volunteers on Saturday, 6 - 8 AM, to check gate passes and help guide vendors to their spots.  This is very important and has long been the biggest "bottle neck" in starting the day!

Ground Operations:

  • Gate Admissions -  Citizens Bank Staff, Janet Krening update.  Karen, We will need petty cash & boxes for admissions as well as t-shirt sales.
  • Information Booth - GEFA, EAA, Sutter Buttes 99's Carol Andrews update
  • Announcer's Stand and Sound System - Gordon Beatie, portable lift and umbrella.  Dave Schwarz, Rich Mead and Bruce Marlow, power and sound system update.

  • Ground Facilities - Bruce Marlow update.  This includes Waste & disposal, tables, and shade relocation after dance and set up of VIP areas, hanging sponsor banners, booths stancions and so forth.  VERY special thanks to the Marlow Gang who arrived at Marysville after Golden West with truck & trailer to haul everything we need including 27 shades for our event!  Bruce Tracey and a few others too!  You guys are the best!!
  • EAA Classic Auto Display - Evert Young update.  Display vehicle passes must be handed to the drivers before they get to John Bauer Avenue to ease gate confusion during Saturday's "Vendormania."
  • AirFest T-shirt Sales - Gus Young update.
  • Golf Carts - donated by Quail Valley Golf course for water delivery and gate money management.  I will reserve one for Dick Landis, our biggest sponsor as well.  Arrange with Bruce Marlow if you need a cart.

  • CALFIRE/ USFS Air Tanker Demonstration - Ken Hughs update.

Friday Night Dinner/Dance:
Very special thanks to Gerry & Rochelle, Gordon & Sandy, and Chairwoman Betty Pearson for making this happen!  The use of the hangars and anticipated quality of the dinner from ABC Grill and Dance with Sister Swing will make for a banner event at about half the cost of 2007!  Now all we have to do is SELL IT.  As of now (6/28), the comps outweigh ticket sales and I'm getting concerned.  It's time for all of us to tell our friends what they would be missing if they don't attend but not based on our need for $$, rather from the inner glow and enthusiasm in our hearts!  Let's really do it this time!  Really.

  • Hangars Preparation -   Gerry Rose  Gordon Mills update
  • Tables, Chairs and Shades - Betty Pearson update
  • Beer and Wine Sales - Brian O'Brien update
  • Lighting and Power -  Gordon Beatie  update
  • Gate security Chair - Gordon Beatie
  • Aircraft Management - Gary Guilliat
  • Auto Parking and Courtesy Bus Transportation -  Bruce Tracey update
  • On-site admission/ ticket sales - Ken & Julie Zuckerman update
  • Pre-event ticket design and sales -  Tim O’Brien, all $35 tickets have been dispersed to both SPD Markets, BEAM CENTER, Airport Office and Alpine Aviation.  I will begin keeping tabs on quantities and delivery of moneys to Karen.  We'll need to have a cut-off day to give an accurate count for dinner, so encourage all you can to buy dinner tickets.  Special comp tickets are also going to sponsors and invited warbird pilots.  There are some "dance only" tickets printed, but folks can just pay $15 at the gate

I know I have left much out that we will cover at the meeting.  Please feel free to contact me me and keep me posted.  Many final errands to run, but I will be available.

AirFest is indeed a Golden opportunity for local aviation, the airport, our clubs and the future of awarding scholarships.  Two weeks to go - Let's all make it the very best!

Thank you and with all respect, Tim

May 21, 2009

The meeting was called to order at 7:10 pm
Doug Young asked for approval of the April minutes. They were approved — where ever they are.
The treasurers report was read by Karen Smith with the GEFA account having $3,763.17. The Airfest account having $8,361.78.

There were no guests at the May outdoor meeting.

2009 scholarships were put on hold in the Feb. meeting due to lack of funds for this year.
Karyl Marlow did a wonderful job for GEFA we will miss her and we will need to fill her spot for next year.

Tim O’Brien on Airfest 2009:
Tickets are on sale for the Dinner and Dance to be held at Alpine Aviation and Sierra Mt. Aviation. The price is $35.00 for dinner and dancing and $15.00 for just dancing. They will be available at the June Meeting.

Tickets are available at SPD Markets, BEAM Easy-living Center and the airport office.

Send people to the web site www.ncairfest.com for sponsor packets or contact me (Tim) and I will mail them.

Tim had posters and flyers to put up in various places the more we can do this the faster the word gets out.
We will be in the fourth of July parade. Think of a theme for the parade. Tim also showed us a design for the 2009 T-shirt. The group voted and approved the design and they will also be available at the June meeting for sale.

Check out the web sight for the Airfest www.ncairfest.com for his report. There also will be a pancake breakfast put on by EAA #1175 see the web site for details.

We had a speaker. Gary Gulliat told us about his trip to Wright Patterson Museum and the Smithsonian Museum. Lots of interesting information. He was also at Arlington cemetery where he was able to visit the grave of Ben Knowland. Katie said she would send pictures to Gerry Davenport to attach — where are they?

Doug Young Asked some questions toward the end of our meeting and handed out wooden airplanes and puzzles and red white and blue hand towels as prizes for the correct answers — something different. Hope to see you at the next meeting in June.

Meeting was adjourned.

Sorry it is so late, I have been in Vacaville cleaning out 40 years of memories at my Dads mobile home that is now sold. Thanks again for your patience.

March 19, 2009

The meeting was called to order at 7:10 pm, as many were enjoying Betty Pearson’s spectacular baklava desert. Many kudos! In the absence of 3 of the 4 officers, it remained for Karen Smith to preside. The minutes of the Feb 19 meeting were approved. Treasurer Karen Smith reported account balances as follows: GEFA $3852.19 and Airfest $6699.78.

As we are not funding a scholarship next year, and with the resignation of Karyl Marlow as the Chair of the scholarship committee, there was no report. Karen reported receiving a letter from an aspiring Junior, who pleaded with us to reconsider. We need a volunteer to take this on for next year.

For Old Business, Tim O’Brien reported that the organization of Airfest 2009 is well along, and he hopes to wrap up the planning in a month and have all choices made. The remaining 3 months between now and then will be devoted to the execution of details. An evening dance with Sister Swing on July 10, kicks off the main event on July 11. A less expensive caterer, and less expensive tents should help reduce costs this year.

Gary Guilliat has to date lined up 5 AT-6’s, 5 T-28’s, 3 P51-D’s and Grumman TBM Avenger, and 2 CJ-6’s for the warbird show. Bruce Marlow will again be responsible for Ground Ramp Operations, and Glen and Linda Ward are among the “usual cast of characters” who will again make major contributions to the event. The EAA is in charge of the pancake breakfast, and the County Sheriff’s will do the cooking. Folks from the Citizens Bank will man the gates to collect the $10 admission fee (children 6 and under are free).

Under New Business Karen noted that she continues to receive the Cal Pilots magazine, which has a lot of interesting articles on California airports. She asked if anyone wanted to be the new recipient of this magazine. There followed a lot of “new” jokes to everyone’s delight.

On that note the meeting was adjourned at 7:35 pm

Minutes from the February 19, 2009 meeting

The meeting was called to order at 7:13 the minutes were approved—a spelling error on Jessica Kraemer name was corrected.

The treasurers report was given by Karen Smith as followed GEFA account $3720.17 and the Air Fest Account $6699.78.

Doug received a letter from Karyl Marlow it is attached for all to read. She is resigning as the scholarship chairman. It is a good time for her to step down since this year we voted to not issue a flying scholarship. Thank you for all your work and years of help in getting students, from our local high schools, to be interviewed for our GEFA flying scholarship.

Tim O’Brien introduced Rick Utermoehlen who he meet at the airport and invited him to his first GEFA potluck meeting. Tim told us that the Air Fest sight would be up and running and that he would be working on raising sponsorship for the AirFest. He has committees that need to be filled. He is also getting people that want to be part of our AirFest with there planes—This takes a lot of work but with all of your help Air Fest 2009 will happen. We also brought the gate fee amount charge up, a committee can decide and bring it to the GEFA meeting for a vote.

Tim thought “America We Love” would be a possible name for this years Air Fest are there any other thoughts?????

The largest amount of money is spent on advertisment that promotes that the money raised goes to GEFA scholarships. The other amount is fuel for the various planes that fly in and display theie planes The AirFest is usually the 1st Saturday after the fourth of July which would be July 11th.

Thank you to Keith for our new name badges. You can pick them up at the meetings with a low price of $1.00. We also passed in Jan. that if you attend our meetings without a name tag you would be fined $1.00 a small fund raiser for GEFA.

Doug brought up that if it weren’t for the scholarship his grandson Aria would not have had the chance to learn to fly. He is ready to take his test and get his private pilot license. He is the only one in ROTC a solo under his belt.

Doug brought up if any one is interested in Sport planes. Some were and said they would like some more input.

New Business

It was brought up that they would like a wireless setup at the airport terminal. Karen Smith donated her Link Box and Ken Zuckerman volunteered to install it.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:44 by President Doug Young

Minutes by Maureen Young 3/16/09

Here is Karyl Marlow’s letter:

GEFA Board and Scholarship Committee,
I want you to know how much I have enjoyed being the Golden Empire Flying Association Scholarship Chairperson these past years. I took over this position from Bill Sommers in 2004 when the scholarship was given in memory of my father-in-law, Dick Marlow. A lot has transpired since that time and my life continues to evolve.

Since my life is evolving I think it is time to give up this position and pass it on to another GEFA member. It seems to be a good time to do this as we are not giving a scholarship this year. I am also busy pursuing other interests by going to college and working on a family business.

I have facilitated many scholarships, tracked each student's progress and have substantially contributed to the GEFA Scholarship program. I have extensive organized records on each scholarship, including applicants, recipients, contacts that I have developed, etc. I would like to pass this information along to GEFA at a convenient time.

I have tied up remaining loose ends. Barbara Ross at Nevada Union and interested scholarship applicants have been notified that we are not awarding a scholarship this year. The remaining scholarship funds have been paid out to Alpine Aviation for Jessica Kraemer, 2008 scholarship recipient and directly to Joseph Paddock the special private donation scholarship. This completes our scholarship commitments to date. The total amount for these payments are $1,665, not the $2,500 I had estimated. Perhaps GEFA could award Jessica an additional scholarship as we have other scholarship recipients in the pass.

I would like to thank the GEFA Scholarship Selection Committee participants from 2004 to 2008, Bear Smith, Alan Krosner, Carol Andrews, Bruce McGrew and Perry Thomas. They have contributed a great deal to selecting our recipients.

Respectfully yours,
Karyl Marlow

Minutes from the January 15, 2009

President Doug Young called the meeting to order at 7:10 and the minutes from the November 20, 2008 meeting were approved.

Treasure Karen Smith reported account balances as follows: GEFA $5241.17  and Air fest $6699.78.

There were no guests in Jan.

Scholarship update by Karyl Marlow: Jessica Creamer has been flying some. It was brought up that there is a possibility of no revenue this year and the funds in the scholarship account have been earmarked for Jessica and Joseph. The air fest lost money last year due to fuel prices and we don’t know what will happen this year so a vote was taken and approved not to fund a new scholarship this year.

Old Business

Air fest Tim O’Brian was not present so will hopefully hear in February what is happening.

A Birthday song was sung by all in attendance to Bobsie Bostic on being 80 years young.

Kathy Hammes, Rusty Hamer, Miles Bostic, and Jim Hebb are our clean up and maintenance crew at the GEFA picnic area at the airport. Thank you all for such great work.

New Business

Karen Smith came up with a way to generate some revenue and help getting to know everyone by name.

Everyone will wear a name tag to the meetings and if you don’t have one you will be assesed $1.00. Karen made the motion and Rusty seconded it. The discussion that followed was that Keith Thomassen has a power point design that can be used for badges. Contact Keith at Thomassen@theunion.net. The motion carried by a voice vote.

It was also brought up that dues are due for 2009. $10.00 a person or $20.00 a family, so make your check out to GEFA and send it to PO Box 375, Grass Valley, CA 95945 or catch Karen at the February meeting.

There will be two fly-outs in the future, one to the Grand Canyon in Sept. The south rim. The second trip is in June to the Hood River depending on fuel prices.

A motion to adjourn was approved at 7:36

November 20, 2008

President Allan Krosner called the meeting to order at 7:10 pm and the minutes of the October 16 meeting were approved.

Treasurer Karen Smith reported account balances as follows: GEFA $5211.87 and Airfest $6699.78.

Jessica Kraemer, our current Scholarship recipient, thanked us again and reported she has about 12-14 hours now. She said her activity is also her “senior project.”

Aria Davenport completed a solo cross country from Auburn to Chico and back.

Another guest was Danielle Zuckerman and soon to be born son Nicholas.

Katie Guilliat announced that the old style “wings” badges would have to be ordered in large numbers, and since there are no plans to do that, members are encouraged to make their own personalized badges (GEFA logo is available to copy) and put into plastic badge holders. Katie also reminded us of the December 17 Christmas party and the need to buy tickets by December 11.

Nominations for Board Members and specific Officers were closed and those already nominated (and reported last month) were elected. The new officers are Doug and Maureen Young (President and Secretary), Gary Guilliat (Vice President) and Karen Smith (Treasurer); All are Members of the Board. Gerry Davenport will continue as a Member of the Board and as our Webmaster.

Tim O’Brien led a discussion of the possibility of doing AirFest 2009. Evan Wolfe, who led the very successful Auburn event this summer joined in with comments on their experiences. Tim is concerned about raising sponsor money in the current economy and the group discussed options for spending less, such as a less costly dinner dance. Karen Smith wanted us to put a focus on generating scholarship money, and on enticing new members. Evan reported that they raised their entrance fee to $10 and had no complaints whatsoever. It was suggested that we try to get some county support for the event (as Placer County did for Auburn). Karen moved that we put together a committee to explore the ways and means for putting on AirFest 2009. It was seconded and passed.

Allan noted the passing of Don Ellis, and said that services would be held at 2pm on Nov 21 at the Methodist Church in Grass Valley. Gary Guilliat said the RV formation group would do a flyover and missing man formation at 4pm on Nov 23 at the airport.

Gerry Davenport agreed to make a website section for memorials like the one he put out for Don this week. He noted that he read with great interest the material submitted for Don, and Maureen Young mentioned it was a shame that some of us only learned of his achievements after he passed away.

Keith Thomassen asked him if he would be willing to post a picture and brief statement for each member so we can get to know our fellow members better in this way. Please send a JPEG file of your picture to Gerry, with a short statement (50 words or less) of what you’d like others to know about you.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:35 pm.

October 16, 2008

President Allan Krosner called the meeting to order at 7:15 pm and the minutes of the September 18 meeting were approved.

Treasurer Karen Smith reported account balances as follows: GEFA $5203.87 and Airfest $6699.78.

A $200 deposit was made towards our reservation of Alta Sierra for Christmas.

Frank Minor introduced his son John as his guest. John just finished his M.D. in Pediatrics, and is interested in flying.

Allan asked for further nominations for officers, and elections are next month. Gary and Karen agreed to run again for Vice President and Treasurer respectively, and Doug and Maureen Young volunteered to run for President and Secretary.

Katie Guilliat announced that the Christmas party will be held on Wed, Dec 17. By a show of hands people chose to again have last year’s guitarist and to reserve the dance floor.

Gary Guilliat suggested a fly-out for lunch at Half Moon Bay on Sunday, Oct 19. He said the recent fly-out to McMinneville saw the best possible flying weather in Oregon, and the 3 couples that participated enjoyed the Spruce Goose display on Saturday. There is also an IMAX theater there. A stop on the coast Sunday morning for breakfast at Salishan, a resort near Gleneden, topped off the trip.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:30 pm.

September 18, 2008

President Allan Krosner called the meeting to order at 6:45 pm after an enjoyable gathering of members and our last BBQ at the park for 2008.

The August minutes were accepted as written Treasurer Karen Smith gave the treasury report as follows: GEFA Account Balance: $5453.87 Airfest Account Balance: $6699.78

Nancy Machado introduced her sister, Sharon Gibson, as a guest for the evening. (The resemblance was uncanny!)

Katie Guilliat talked of the potential for a fly out to McMinnville, Oregon for the weekend of September 26-28th with a visit to the museum that houses the Spruce Goose. This will be a last minute decision dependent on the weather.

Katie also asked the club if they would like a Christmas Party held at the Alta Sierra Country Club in December as has been held in the past. This idea was approved with the cost of the dinner ticket to be $40. It was also unanimously accepted that any additional expenses incurred, if any, would be paid with club funds. Katie will contact Alta Sierra CC to organize this event and will report on the date at the next scheduled meeting. Gayle Amato volunteered to assist.

Karen Smith asked if any club members would like to tour the DC-10 Tanker Base atMcClellen. This could be a fly out or drive out whichever suites you. Karen will get back with details.
It was additionally suggested by a member that a tour of the museum could be incorporated in this visit. For more information on the museum visit: http://www.aerospacemuseumofcalifornia.org

Jim Booth spoke about the fun that was had at Reno this year and how everyone that attended the "Margarita Bash" that was hosted by Jim and Mary Booth andBar-tendedby Glen Ward was a real success. Tim O'Brien talked about the great pictures he took and will hopefully give us a showing next month.

Evan Wolfe told us about Dego Red being based at Auburn in the near future. He also said that there were two P-51's that were on there way to Auburn as well. He will most likely be flying these P-51's in the future so he was very excited about their arrival.

Aria Davenport gave an update on his flying as well as his joining the ROTC. He travels down to Sacramento two days a week to attend classes. He is the only "pilot" in the group. Go Aria!

Allan Krosner asked for volunteers to run for the position of President and Secretary. No one responded. (But after the meeting was adjourned, Doug Young volunteered to run for President and Maureen Young volunteered to run for Secretary.) Gary Guilliat will run for VP and Karen Smith will run for Treasurer again for 2009.

This is the last month that the GEFA meeting will be held at the Airport Park. The next meeting will be held at Seaman's Lodge at Pioneer Park on October 16th, 2008. Social starts at 6:00 and dinner starts at 6:45 with the general meeting to follow.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:15 pm.

August 21, 2008

Vice President Gary Guilliat called the meeting to order at 7:25 pm and the minutes of the July 17 meeting were approved. Treasurer Karen Smith reported account balances as follows: GEFA $5453.87 and Airfest $6699.78.

Gary introduced our scholarship winner, Jessica Kraemer, who personally thanked us for our support. She has 10-12 hours with Adam at Alpine Aviation, and is enjoying it immensely.

Tim O’Brien reported that the Auburn airshow was fantastic. In perfect weather and a good crowd, he and Sandy Sanders did the announcements. They had a Friday dinner/social and there was a display of antique cars.

Katie Guilliat reported that you could get badges at the Trophy Shop on Maltman. Download the GEFA logo from the website (or any other logo you want) and bring it to the shop.

There were 8 airplanes and 16 folks that went to Jackson Hole and Glacier from August 12 to 17. (SEE THE PHOTOS) (SEE THE SLIDESHOW MOVIE)Betty Pearson gave a report on the trip. The group was treated on arrival in Jackson Hole to a margarita social hour in the park, courtesy of the Thomassen’s who arrived two days earlier, then rib’s at Bubba’s.

The next day began with breakfast at Jackson Lake Lodge with its spectacular view of Mt. Moran, and a wonderful day driving through Teton National Park and a walk to Leigh Lake (saw lots of Elk). Dinner at the Bar J Ranch for their meal and musical show capped the day.

The group departed on the 14th for Cut Bank, where they were greeted by an impending full weekend airport fly-in and car show, so parking became a challenge. A casual afternoon around the Many Glacier Hotel was followed by another “margarita hour” and then dinner in the Hotel. A hike followed a lovely boat ride on two lakes for some folks on the second day. All had dinner at the Cattle Baron in Babb. The next day was spent driving to Waterton, Canada and stopping at the Prince of Wales Hotel before returning to Cut Bank for another margarita hour. Dinner at the Shenandoah completed the day. The group flew home on the 17th, Rudy and Keith going non-stop and the rest going to Pasco, WA for lunch before heading home. Great trip!

Gary Guilliat suggested a fly-in next moth to McMinneville to see the Spruce Goose, and to the museum at Tillamock. He suggested the last week in September. Contact him if interested, and for details.

Bruce McGrew reported on OSH. He said it was well attended (540,000 according to the EAA)—more than 2006 but less than 2007. He said his video business area is doing well, although some thought other business areas are down.

Jim Booth invited all to stop by the eve of Wed Sept 10 at the Reno Air races, for a social hour at the trailer. The Frisbee’s said they were going to Gold Beach the 27th and invited people to join them.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:05 pm.

Respectfully,
Keith Thomassen
Secretary.
